Hi,
I’m a Newbie to this forum and hoping for some advice.

I just purchased a pair (almost similar) of cast iron armchairs.
I am unsure of their value and don’t want to make a mistake. So I would like to know if I should just clean them up and leave them in their original condition or to restore it from scratch and

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Mizou

They are certainly worth buying if price is affordable and they are structurally OK !! Nothing bent up or broken !! Screws are no big deal,, they can be replaced easy enough !! Are they in Bali too ??
These look like they have none of the original finish left !! These would be better repainted !! How many of these chairs are there ?? What are they asking for these ??

If you will notice the claw does not touch the ground,, it has the ball in its talons !! A claw foot would touch the ground without the ball !! The ball and claw foot has been used from late 1700`s to the 1940`s here in the U.S.,,It was almost a trademark for Duncan Phyfe !! But he didn`t make cast iron furniture !! I would not touch either chair !! Small repairs are to be expected in antique furniture and are part of its charm !! Collectors will buy a chair like this even with repairs as long as paint is original,!! And for a higher price !! But that said,, they are your chairs and the shabby chic look may not be your design taste !! So make yourself happy with them and repaint if that’s more to your liking !! Just as long as you know the pro`s and cons !!

I also found this set of cast iron chairs and very tempted to negotiate a price for them with the same seller.
They are in good condition and are very heavy but they have been repainted sometime in the past.

What do you think ?
Is it worth looking into further ?
Thank you

Thank you “marthahill” for your reply.

I am currently in Bali and found those in a second hand shop.
The paint seems to be original and the feet are claw feet (see pics).
What’s the difference between the claw feet and ball feet ?
I couldn’t find any foundry marks but will take another look when they are delivered next week and let you know and I”ll also take your advice to keep it in its original condition.

As for the second chair, it looks like some modifications / re-welding was done and I might consider cleaning it up and repainting this one.
