I have a vintage, original, three door oak ice box with the manufacturer’s plate: “North Star Refrigerator Company, Chattanooga, Tennessee.” I have not been able to find out any information about this piece on the internet and would appreciate any help.

Those attachments do not work here !! But I can see the back pic,, it is not what I thought it might be !! North Star Refrigeration Co was from Richmond Indiana,, not Chattanooga Tenn !! The Tennessee furniture company purchased the company as well as the Odorless Refrigeration Company and two other furniture companies about 1920 !! This is according to the industrial engineering PDF files I found as well as files on refrigeration !! It really is a bit confusing since little is written about any of them !! It did not say that the North Star Refrigeration Co was located in Chattanooga,, Just that they bought the company !! Another file gave the location as Indiana !! I am not sure any of it is correct !! However many did continue using the company name after a purchase if the rights to the name were included with the purchase !! It said that Tennessee Furniture Co. was the largest in the area after the purchase of the other 4 companies !! Oddly there was another North Star Refrigerator Co. in Niles Michigan at that time !! Let me see if I can find more tomorrow !!
Sorry,, I assumed you were using “refrigerator” in your search to find others made by the company !! Usually they are listed as Ice boxes and are much easier to track down !! But in this case,, nothing is easy to track down !!

I purchased this oak ice box from my great aunt in Iowa in the early 1970’s. The finish was peeling so I refinished it that same year, had all the peeling, nickle plated hardware commercially stripped, polished and clear coated. The name plate shown was on it at time of purchase but no drip pan was included as the u nit had been used as storage only for many years. My aunt recalls it being in her parents’ summer kitchen for as long as she can remember; she was born in 1905. I have no reason at this point to doubt that it is an original ice box and not a reproduction. According to online sources, original wooden “ice boxes” were marketed as “refrigerators.” Only when electric refrigerators were introduced did the outdated wooden units were called “ice boxes.” To date, I have found very little info on the North Star Refrigerator Company in Chattanooga.
