I purchased this oak ice box from my great aunt in Iowa in the early 1970’s. The finish was peeling so I refinished it that same year, had all the peeling, nickle plated hardware commercially stripped, polished and clear coated. The name plate shown was on it at time of purchase but no drip pan was included as the u nit had been used as storage only for many years. My aunt recalls it being in her parents’ summer kitchen for as long as she can remember; she was born in 1905. I have no reason at this point to doubt that it is an original ice box and not a reproduction. According to online sources, original wooden “ice boxes” were marketed as “refrigerators.” Only when electric refrigerators were introduced did the outdated wooden units were called “ice boxes.” To date, I have found very little info on the North Star Refrigerator Company in Chattanooga.
