You sound like you are experienced with this sort of thing and, at the risk of sounding a bit like a certain TV commercial, I wonder if you could direct me to someplace where I can do the research you mention. This radio belonged to a friend who recently passed. He had quite a collection of old radios and neither I nor his family have an understanding of the value of these nor how to determine it. I know my friend valued them highly and had many of them repaired, both electronics and cabinet work. This Panatrope is one of the more unique but there are many more.
