I agree with your first reply, The only thing you might have to worry about is hand painted dishes. Be careful, I would not advise you to wash them in a dishwasher though.
as far as I know they are safe my mother used them all the time when we were children and we are all fine. By the way if you or anyone you know is interested on buying a set of Nortaki China I have one for sale. I don’t really want to sell it but I have to save my home.
