I truly fell in love with this dogs face! It looks like Majolica to me but wanted another opinion to verify and possibly date the item. He measures 10-1/2″ X 11″ X 20-1/2″, and weighs about 25 pounds. There is no hallmark on the bottom. Thanks for your assistance….

Yes I am in the U.S.,,Texas to be exact !! Your dog is an Old English Bulldog !! It appears to be quite early,,turn of the century or before !! The bottom tells a lot about these things !! See how dark the foot is ?? That part is usually unglazed and will collect dust and dirt over the years !! The darker it is,,usually the earlier it is !!
If its not too much trouble,, let me suggest another forum that I am on www.antique-shop.com !! Its like one big family there and they have excellent researchers !! One of the members is in the UK and works with museums !! I would like him to take a look at this stand and get his opinion !! I still think this is an English made item !!
May have better pics as well !! But I will still keep looking either way !!

Hi, I’m a Jersey Girl myself! As always, thanks for your assistance. I’m going to join that forum now…but, take a look at this link when you get a chance: http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/192309599866?ul_noapp=true

Are you in the UK SophieMarie ?? It does not look like Majolica !! Majolica usually has a very high gloss due to the second glaze with the metal oxides !! However these may not be the best pics to determine majolica or not !! Some majolica is quite heavy and some not depending on the clay that is used and the type of item it is !!
Your bulldog looks to have quite a bit of age to it and reminds me of the Staffordshire dogs by the look on his face !!

Thanks MarthaHill for the reply. I’m in the US actually with this dog umbrella stand that is driving me crazy….I’ve searched to try and find a similar item, You in US as well?
Do you know of any good Majolica sites? I just joined Kovels a few days ago, because when searching I saw a hallmark (that I needed). It turned out that it wasn’t the one. But, Kovels still seems to be interesting. It was for another Majolica item…..of course! I’ll post in a bit so you can see that one too.
The bull dog (or maybe its a pit bull, boston terrier, or another breed) does have some shine to it. But, the pictures on this site show up so terribly small – they are difficult to see. I agree with you though in that it resembles a Staffordshire dog. I’ll keep searching and let you know if I learn something!
