Maybe something to do with hats. Either measuring or shaping them for a perfect fit?

Looks like a typewriter head of some sort. Maybe the predecessor to the ball head version?

This is the inside mechanism in the machine that stamps or embosses alphabetical letters into metal plates such as dog tags. This makes the information very permanent.

My first thought is that it is something that goes along with a musical instrument of some kind. Music box? A unique circular keyboard instrument? The strips around the center remind me of a music box.

Looks like the guts to an old typewriter to me. I think it’s the special one that was round, and the keys flew up in a circle as it typed?

Typewriter. This is changeable text size and font, similar to much later Selectric ball for IBM typewriter. Do not believe rumor that a very small mouse or gerbil was in center section to help make the letter or symbol selection. Mouse was said to be replaced after introduction because their tails got caught in the mechanism, but I personally do not believe the rumor. It would be difficult to train and then feed and care for a mouse. But this may be where the we get today’s usage for a computer mouse. ????
