**POST 1 OF 3 TO ATTACH PICTURES.**

I recently discovered a pottery mug at a local thrift store. I asked a close relative with a long history in antiques what the origin was and he told me it was a Quimper. Since then I’ve bought the Schiffer Quimper Collectibles Book and am still unsure because the style just seems a bit different. It’s not marked so it would have been produced before marks occurred pre 1860. What’s interesting about this mug is the inscription painted on the side ‘Compliments Fred W. Lander’. The only ties I can make with this name is the famous American Fredrick West Lander (1821 to 1862) who was a transcontinental United States explorer, general in the Union Army during the American Civil War, and a prolific poet (source: Wikipedia). The colors are very vibrant with great depth and are unlike some of the Quimper I’ve seen at the auctions and in the books, but the style of clothes depicted on the piece are certainly similar to the origin of Quimper. It’s a heavy mug without a single chip or break although crazing due to age has occurred. Two of the four sides, the fourth side for the handle, have painted images of a boy and a girl, one on a boat dock with a toy boat and doll and one on land with a cat. The 3rd side has the painted inscription noted above. It’s also more beige in color which I believe dates it back to an earlier piece as well. Also, what would the inscription imply? Was this mug/cup made for Fred W. Lander? Was it a gift? Any help provided is greatly appreciated. Please see pics.
