Arequipa Pottery

Arequipa Pottery

Arequipa Pottery was produced from 1911 to 1918 by the patients of the Arequipa Sanatorium in Marin County, north of San Francisco. The patients were trained by Frederick Hurten Rhead, who had worked at the Roseville Pottery. The Arequipa patients painted designs on or carved patterns into the clay to decorate it. Ivy leaves are a common design on Arequipa items. For more information, explore our identification guides for Frederick Hurten Rhead and American art pottery.
