Q: I found this vintage hand-painted sign dated 1864 and would like to know more about it. It looks like the seal President Thomas Jefferson used on some of his letters and documents. It includes his motto, “Ab Eo Libertas A Quo Spiritus,” (Latin for “He who gives life gives liberty,”) with “Sharpsburg” and “Gettysburg.” The face plate is riveted to a steel rim. The sign is about 10 inches in diameter and is in excellent condition. We were told it hung in a drinking establishment or in the home of the maker. What can you tell us about it?
